Residential camp: An invaluable opportunity for anyone entering the fields of education, special ed., psychology, speech therapy, health care, emergency response personnel or any number of careers where you may interact with individuals on the autism spectrum. Work 1:1 with individuals with autism at Camp Hand in Hand. As a camp counselor, you not only gain personal experience, you touch the lives of individuals with autism by supporting a unique camp experience. You will have the chance to gain valuable first-hand experience using structure, environmental supports, social stories, and individual communication systems. Counselors provide whatever supports the camper needs, which may include personal care, sensory breaks, individual activities. Counselors work as part of a team with other counselors and an experience lead staff member. Activities include swimming, fishing, boating, crafts, nature, archery, horseback riding and music groups with a focus on social interaction and communication. Campers are divided into groups by age, gender and interests. All sessions employ lead staff with a background in autism to assist the counselors. No previous experience is necessary. Meals and lodging are included. Camp Knutson is located in Crosslake, MN, north of Brainerd on Trout Lake and Lower Whitefish Lake. Training is provided prior to each camp week. Camp Hand in Hand provides camp for ages 9 and up (depending upon the session). Internships can be done at camp.

Dates include staff training.

Session 1 – June 23-30 (boys 19-21, girls 18+)

Session 2 – July 28-Aug. 4 (boys 15-18)

Session 3 – Aug. 4-11 (boys 22+)

Session 4 – Aug. 11-18 (boys 9-14, girls 9-17)

 

Our day camp offers similar opportunities, for our younger campers, at Camp Butwin in Eagan, MN. Wahode Day camp is staffed 1:2 staff to campers. Campers have the opportunity to participate in sports, climbing tower, swimming, music and much more. Training is provided prior to camp. Dates for camp are as follows:

Session 1 – July 10-14 (boys and girls 6-12)

Session 2 – July 24-28 (boys and girls 6-12)
