All position start August 21st 2017. This is an 11 month service opportunity (Americorps).
Do you love to help children and have interest in helping to grow their math skills and succeed in school? If your answer is yes, consider joining the Minnesota Math Corps and make a difference in the lives of elementary and middle students! We’ll provide training so no prior tutoring, formal education experience, or experience with children is necessary. In addition to extensive training, tutors will receive on-site support from trained school math coaches. Tutors come from many backgrounds and include recent high school and college grads, career changers, stay-at-home parents, and retirees.
Start date: August, 2017
Part time and full time schedule: Monday through Friday, Generally 20 hours per week part time and 40 hours per week full time.
Living Allowance: par time -$272 every two weeks before taxes, full time – $544 every two weeks before taxes.
Education Award: up to $5,600 educational award after their term of service.
Responsibilities:
Math Enrichment Tutors work with paired groups of students (fourth through eighth grade) who need extra support with math. Tutors are trained to use a variety of scripted Minnesota Math Corps strategies, called interventions throughout the day. Tutors work with the same student pairs for a total of 90 minutes during the week. Tutors are also trained and supported to conduct quick and easy math assessments, and enter the student data into an online data system each week. Tutors will review student data on a regular basis with their internal coach to monitor the progress of each student, and to know if they need to change their tutoring to better meet each student’s needs. Tutors will maintain confidentiality of all student data.
Tutors will attend required Math Corps sponsored trainings to learn the Mathematics strategies, and will receive the support of a coach in order to implement the strategies successfully.
In addition, tutors may also attend some site-sponsored activities such as book fairs and family nights.
Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.
Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by your start date.
Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
Speak, read, and write English fluently.
Interest in education, specifically helping elementary-aged students develop their math skills.
Dedication to community service.
Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
Attention to detail.
Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated and professional.
Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff.
Excellent time management and decision-making skills.
Ability to work with diverse personalities.
Ability to adapt to a sometimes challenging, high-pressure environment.
