This is an 11 month service opportunity (Americorps).<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that students who don\u2019t read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school? Our goal is to help all Minnesota children become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade and give them a better start to their futures. If you are passionate about education and literacy, join us and make a difference in the lives of preschool and elementary students. Become a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor and help struggling readers, age 3 to grade 3, get on track for reading at grade level. We\u2019ll provide training to get you started and ongoing coaching so you\u2019ll be supported throughout your term of service.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities:<\/p>\n<p>Work one-on-one with students in kindergarten through third grade who need extra support learning to read. Tutors work with the same students in 20-minute sessions every day during school hours, using a variety of scripted Minnesota Reading Corps strategies, called interventions.<br \/>\nWith younger students, tutors help build early literacy skills, such as letter sounds and names, and word blending. For older students, tutors select reading passages and follow intervention scripts to practice fluency skills.<br \/>\nConduct quick and easy literacy assessments, and enter the student data into an online data system. Tutors will use this data to monitor student progress, plan, and set goals.<br \/>\nMaintain confidentiality of all student data<br \/>\nProvide opportunities for families to get involved in their child\u2019s education by sharing Reading Corps literacy activities to do at home<br \/>\nAttend 3 days of mandatory training prior to service with students, plus additional required training sessions throughout the year. Tutors will receive the consistent support of an onsite coach. Some travel may be necessary to attend training.<br \/>\nParticipate in site-sponsored activities such as book fairs and family nights<br \/>\nAll position require availability everday Monday-Friday during regular school hours.<br \/>\nWhile the majority of service hours are completed onsite during school hours, most tutors engage in additional community service, which may take place during evening and weekend hours.<\/p>\n<p>Strong interest in education, specifically in helping elementary\u00a0students develop their\u00a0literacy skills<br \/>\nDedication\u00a0to community service and abilityto commit to a full term of service<br \/>\nBasic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email<br \/>\nAttention to detail<br \/>\nOrganized, responsible, flexible, motivated, and professional<br \/>\nAbility to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff<br \/>\nExcellent time management and decision-making skills<br \/>\nAbility\u00a0to work with diverse personalities and adapt to the school environment<br \/>\nStrong personal standards of excellence, ethics, and integrity<br \/>\nEligibility Requirements<\/p>\n<p>Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently<br \/>\nAge 18 or older by the program\u00a0start date<br \/>\nPossess a\u00a0high school diploma or a GED by the program\u00a0start date<br \/>\nCitizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States<br \/>\nPlease note:<\/p>\n<p>Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are\u00a0not\u00a0eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, AmeriCorps members are limited to four terms of service.<br \/>\nTutors are paid a modest living allowance every two weeks during their service term and receive an education award upon successful completion which may be used to pay qualified student loans or tuition. Tutors over age 55 may choose to gift their education award to their child or grandchild.
