I&#8217;m contacting you on behalf of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt regarding your interest in Saxon Math. I wanted to let you know that the program will be fully retired and no longer available after 6\/20\/24.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to share with you some essential philosophies to keep in mind, some common curricular alternatives, and some valuable resources for your classroom. In full transparency, most curricula have very similar scopes and sequences. So, what has the most significant impact on student learning? Teachers crafting quality lessons? Peers influencing understanding in a culture of discussion? Individual students who show grit? The first is Jo Boaler\u2019s (2015) Balance Triangle. Much attention has been given to computational skill building in many curricula like Saxon Math. In 2001, the National Research Council sought to address a concern expressed by many Americans: that too few students in our schools are successfully acquiring the mathematical knowledge, skill, and confidence they need to use the mathematics they have learned. This model shows that these different portions must work together to help grow our students.<\/p>\n<p>Before discussing common curricular choices, I\u2019d like to recommend getting your students to talk! Stockero et al. (2011) found benefits to having students regularly share their mathematical thinking out loud in class, which can also increase student engagement and confidence. There are many student-centered ways get your students to do this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students show how to solve through small group explanations<\/li>\n<li>Supporting students&#8217; learning process through guidance<\/li>\n<li>Students provide alternative ideas or multiple methods<\/li>\n<li>Students clarify ideas and correct misconceptions<\/li>\n<li>Students compare ideas with each other<\/li>\n<li>Students question one another<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No matter what curriculum you choose, how do you expect your students to show that they genuinely get it? What follows are some best practices to use in your classroom to prompt discussion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide Support\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIs this like another problem?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDid you make a picture?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat is hard about this problem?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat have you tried?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhere did you get stuck?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow can you decide if this answer is correct?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat do you think is the right answer? Why?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Find Out What Your Students Are Thinking\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cTell me about . . .\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhy did you . . .\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow did you . . .\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat would happen if you . . .\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Provide Extensions\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cCan you find another way?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat if you . . .?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWill it work if . . .?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Post-Activity\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cHow did you solve this? What steps did you take?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWill your method always work?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhy did you do this?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow does this picture\/model connect to your work?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat did you do that helped you understand the problem?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWas there something in the problem that reminded you of another problem?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDid you find information that you didn\u2019t need? How did you decide?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow did you decide that your answer was correct?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDid you try something that didn\u2019t work? How did you know?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCan something in this problem help you solve other problems?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is very difficult to know what exact textbook options may work best for your individual school\u2019s needs. An excellent place to start is <a href=\"https:\/\/edreports.org\/compare\/results\/math-k-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EdReports<\/a>, which has thoroughly vetted many curricula. In my opinion, there are several reasons to ponder a blended curriculum:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savvas.com\/index.cfm?locator=PS3c5r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enVision Math<\/a>, K-8 (Savvas Learning)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mheducation.com\/prek-12\/program\/reveal-math-k-12\/MKTSP-GIP20M0.html\">Reveal Math<\/a>, K-8 (McGraw-Hill)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmhco.com\/programs\/into-math\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Into Math<\/a>, K-8 Differentiation (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curriculumassociates.com\/programs\/i-ready-learning\/i-ready-classroom-mathematics-2024\">i-Ready Classroom Math<\/a>, K-8 (Curriculum Associates)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.midschoolmath.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mid School Math<\/a>, 5-8 (Core Curriculum)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some schools have asked what other WELS schools are using.
